Part of visiting a new country or city is experiencing its unique culture and flavour. This applies to Cape Town as much, if not more so, than any other city as it is home to so many diverse and colourful cultures, each with its own distinct “flavour” and way of life.
Our guide, Yayga Arend, takes you on a one or two hour stroll (depending on the time you have) to experience his Bo Kaap, situated on the slopes of Signal Hill, and its cuisine through the stories of past and present.
Yayga is a member of the Bo Kaap community and has lived here his whole life. Get ready to learn and enjoy as you visit many interesting landmarks, such as the oldest mosque in the southern hemisphere, the colourful facades of 18th century slave homes on the cobbled streets and many other political and cultural points of interest.
The tour usually starts with a visit to the Bo Kaap Museum where you will get to see the pieces that make up this fascinating history before you take to the street and see it all first hand through the eyes of the actual residents.
Just when you think you’ve seen all there is to know about the Bo Kaap, our guide will invite you into his home where you will be able to sample traditional Cape Malay hospitality and cuisine like samoosas, briyani and authentic koeksisters.
